Paper Wick.

There’s a paper wick inside a box,
Hidden at the base of my soul,
Underneath those notes you wrote,
The laughs, the jokes I’ve told.
Since almost a full year ago,
It’s been boxed away inside,
Under all those notes you wrote,
Is where the wick resides.

And every time they say your name,
Or speak of us like we’re together,
The wick moves closer to the surface,
Yet it’s bound to the depths forever.
Thankfully, it is bound there by,
A tiny silver chain,
My Christmas gift, a year ago,
Kept subdued some of the pain.

The broken chain wrapped tightly around,
Is all that keeps my heart in place,
It began it’s work in my heart after that phone call,
The warm June day I fell flat on my face.

Trying to reinforce the chain during change,
Find something to help with transition,
I turn up the noise to block out the silence,
Left my pain in the hands of a musician.
But, I still have a paper wick inside a box,
Hidden at the base of my soul,
Underneath those notes you wrote,
The laughs, the jokes I’ve told.

That wick’s a testy little thing,
And if someone were to light it,
The chain would snap, my heart explode,
And all the things inside it.
My entire being would be torn to shreds,
Then what would I have left to start again from?
A billion shattered pieces, a broken silver chain,
Struggling to help me fight the daily currents pulling me farther into the depths of seriously Insane.
